The Right Guidance for College and Career Success: Maximizing Your Educational Investment

So, You Have #CollegeAcceptances – Now What?

Many seniors who have applied to college have now received college acceptances. In many cases, you have received acceptance letters from more than one college. As you think about which college to attend, consider these actions in your discernment process:

Be Gracious.

You are among the 30% of California high school graduates who qualified to attend a 4-year university AND actually applied AND were admitted to a college (and if you are in a different state, you are a similar statistic). Be proud of what you have accomplished, but also be thoughtful when talking with other students. Not everyone will have the same opportunities as you do, so be sensitive to other people’s situations without boasting about your own.

Be Intentional.

If you have more than two or more college acceptances, take your time to determine which one is the right one for you. Visit each school to get a feel for what it would be like to go to school there. Talk with students who attend each school to see what they like and don’t like about it. Try to communicate with those who teach at each school, especially in the area you want to major in. If you’re into sports, talk to someone who is involved with the athletic program; if you’re religious, talk with someone involved in activities or classes that are faith-based; if you’re interested in studying abroad, talk with someone in the study abroad office; etc. What is the “vibe” you get from each of these conversations?

Be Reflective.

Take time to write down your thoughts about your college options. Create pros and cons lists so you can compare your choices visually. Picture as clearly as you can what your first semester at each college might look like. Share hare your ideas about college choice with those who serve as mentors in your life, and ask for their advice. Listen to the little voice inside your heart and mind to discern which college is the right fit for you.
